What is True Love?



I recently experienced a very close friend deal with her husband cheating on her. When she discovered the first clue, the subsequent clues continued to show up and there was no question her marriage had been compromised.

Her first reaction was that she wanted to kill herself. Imagine that! Wanting to kill yourself because of someone else’s actions.

During her married life, did she allow herself to lose the essence of who she is, and believe that the only way she could experience love was through her husband’s actions and feelings?

What about her children? What about her friends? What about her faith in God? What about…herself?!

I believe love starts with self love and that gives you the ability to feel all kinds of love. Can you really continue a passionate relationship; a true love relationship with someone, if you completely put your heart in their hands? It is very romantic to say that and we feel that way when we are in love but are we really willing to rely on someone else’s decisions to manage our love forever? Sounds like a big risk considering the track record of human beings.

True love comes from within and goes outward. We cannot even receive love if we do not open our hearts to loving ourselves. Believing we are perfect, embracing our personal challenges and differences, forgiving ourselves for our mistakes, allows us to love others, truly.

It has been a few months since my friend held a knife in her hand and contemplated suicide. With the love of family and friends, her faith in God, and the realization that the only actions she can control are her own, she has found the immense power of self love. The thought now of letting anyone rob her of her right to love and be loved, because of a mistake they made, is a thing of the past.

It is very interesting to note, that her husband has also experienced her metamorphosis. He is trying to rebuild what has broken down in their relationship and they are still together. She loves him and he loves her but she has changed. She looks better, feels better and whatever happens, she is forever secure because she has found the real meaning of true love and she does not have to go any further than herself.
